Fulfil Your Obligation

What is Fidya?

Fidya is given for missed fasts when someone was unable to fast during Ramadan due to a valid reason — such as illness or pregnancy — and has not been able to make up those fasts before the next Ramadan.

Fidya is used to feed a person in need, equivalent to approximately 750g of staple food (such as wheat, bread, or rice). This is currently set at $1 per missed fast.

Please note: the missed fasts must still be made up when you are able.

Fidya & Kaffarah FAQs

Everything you need to know about fulfilling your missed fasts.

What is Fidya?

Fidya is paid for missed fasts when someone has not fasted in Ramadan for a valid reason (for example ill health or pregnancy) and they have not been able to make up the missed days by the next Ramadan. Fidya covers the feeding of 750g of food (wheat, bread or rice) to a poor person; currently this is set at $1 per day of missed fast. The missed fasts will still need to be made up.

What is Kaffarah?

Kaffarah is the compensation payable if one deliberately misses or breaks a fast in the month of Ramadan without a valid reason. The compensation to be given is the feeding of 60 poor people which currently equates to $60 for each day of fast which is intentionally missed or broken. The missed fasts will still need to be made up.

Do I still need to make up the missed fasts?

Yes. Paying Fidya or Kaffarah does not replace the obligation to make up the missed fasts. The missed days must still be observed when you are able to do so.

How much is Fidya and Kaffarah?

Fidya is currently set at $1 for each missed fast (the equivalent of feeding one poor person 750g of staple food). Kaffarah is currently set at $60 for each day of fast deliberately missed or broken (the equivalent of feeding 60 poor people).

Where does my donation go?

Your Fidya and Kaffarah donations are used to provide nutritious meals to people in need through The Zahra Trust's food distribution programmes, ensuring your obligation is fulfilled and those facing hunger are supported.
