Maytham al-Tammar is remembered as one of the most loyal and spiritually elevated companions of Imam Ali (as)

His life represents courage, humility, and unwavering commitment to truth during a time of political unrest and persecution.

He rose from a humble background to become a respected figure known for his devotion and integrity, showing that true honor is defined by faith rather than status or wealth.

Who was Maytham al-Tammar?

Maytham al-Tammar, whose full name was Maytham ibn Yahya al-Asadi al-Kufi, was of Persian origin and born in Nihrawan near Kufa

He earned the title “al-Tammar” because he worked as a date seller in the marketplace.

Despite his simple profession, he became known for his spiritual depth and close connection to Imam Ali (as).

Early Life and Freedom

Maytham was originally enslaved and later purchased and freed by Imam Ali (as) for the sake of Allah (swt).

This act restored his dignity and changed the course of his life completely.

Imam Ali (as) addressed him by his true name and nurtured him spiritually, raising him from slavery into a position of knowledge and respect.

Relationship with Imam Ali (as)

The Imam (as) would often sit with him publicly in the marketplace, demonstrating that honor is based on faith and character rather than social standing.

Their relationship was built on loyalty, trust, and deep spiritual mentorship.

Knowledge and Spiritual Rank

Through the guidance of Imam Ali (as), Maytham gained deep understanding of Quranic interpretation and spiritual wisdom

He became respected for his insight, and even senior companions would learn from his explanations and knowledge.

Prophecy of His Martyrdom

Imam Ali (as) foretold Maytham’s fate in detail:

“O Maytham! After my death you will be seized and will be hanged. Then on the preceding day blood shall ooze from your nose and mouth, which will dye your beard. Then on the third day a weapon will be pierced in your stomach, which will result in your death, thus look forward to that day. The place where you shall be hanged is facing the house of Amr ibn Hurayth. You shall be the tenth one from among those people who shall be hanged, while the timber of your gallow will be the shortest among all, and it will be nearer to the ground. And I shall show you the palm-tree on whose trunk you shall be hanged.”

Nafasul Mahmum

Maytham accepted this news with complete faith and patience.

Quranic Reflection on His Life

A verse that reflects his steadfastness in faith is:

“Among the believers are men who are true to the covenant that they had made with Allah (swt); so among them is one who has fulfilled his vow (of standing steadfast till death) and among them is one who still waits (for the fulfillment of his vow), and, (unlike the hypocrites,) they have not changed (in the least in their steadfastness).”

Surah Al-Kahf, Ayah 23

This verse reflects Maytham’s unwavering loyalty, even in the face of persecution.

Martyrdom and Legacy

Maytham was arrested during the rule of Ubaydallah ibn Ziyad (la) in Kufa.

Despite being ordered to stop speaking about the virtues of Imam Ali (as), he continued to express his beliefs openly.

His martyrdom occurred exactly as Imam Ali (as) had foretold, confirming his unwavering conviction until the very end.

His life remains a powerful example of faith, sincerity, and courage.

His legacy continues to inspire those who choose truth over fear and principle over comfort.
