Arbaeen (Arabic: الأربعين‎), meaning “forty” in Arabic, marks the end of the 40-day mourning period following Ashura, the day Imam Hussain (as), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (saww), was martyred in the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD. It is a major observance in Shia Islam, commemorating justice, sacrifice, and resistance against tyranny. 

In 2026, Arbaeen is expected to fall on Tuesday, August 4, based on the Islamic lunar calendar (20th of Safar, 1448 AH). Dates may vary slightly depending on moon sightings. 

Arbaeen symbolises the triumph of moral values and the eternal struggle against injustice. It also serves as a time of reflection and spiritual renewal, especially for Shia Muslims, who honor Imam Hussain’s (as) stand against oppression and his ultimate sacrifice.

The Arbaeen Walk, or Ziyarat Arbaeen, is a pilgrimage where millions of people walk from Najaf to Karbala in Iraq, covering approximately 80 kilometres. This journey commemorates the suffering of the family of Imam Hussain and showcases unity, peace, and devotion. 

 Each year, more than 20 million people from over 60 countries participate in the Arbaeen pilgrimage, making it one of the largest annual gatherings in the world — even bigger than Hajj in Mecca. 

While Arbaeen is primarily observed by Shia Muslims, many Sunni Muslims, Christians, Zoroastrians, and followers of other faiths also join the pilgrimage and support the event in solidarity, highlighting its universal message of peace and justice.

While the region has faced challenges, millions safely complete the pilgrimage every year with the support of Iraqi authorities and local volunteers. During Arbaeen every year, on the highway from Najaf to Karbala, thousands upon thousands of zuwwar are served by the volunteers at The Zahra Trust mowkeb at Pole 470.  

From humble begins over 10 years ago to a comprehensive facility which serves thousands of people every day, The Zahra Trust mowkeb has become a staple stopover on the walk for most Western zuwwar.  

 We always say that Project 470 (as it’s known) is ‘more than a mowkeb’ because aside from serving zuwwar, the building itself is used for aid distribution, as well as for hosting vocational training and classes for kids, all year round. Furthermore, the site is also home to our Orphans and Widows Village.
